What is OZURDEX®?
When patients suffer from certain eye conditions, OZURDEX is an implant device that can be injected into the eye by our board-certified Jacksonville eye doctors to treat the problem. The implant is commonly used to treat diabetic macular edema (DME), macular edema as a result of branch retinal vein occlusion or central retinal vein occlusion, and uveitis that causes inflammation in the back portion of the eye. The implant is biodegradable, which means it doesn’t need to be removed after all medication is released.
In addition, OZURDEX contains a corticosteroid, dexamethasone, that is released into the eye continuously. Dexamethasone is responsible for blocking the chemical pathways that cause retinal swelling (edema), eye inflammation (uveitis), and leaking blood vessels in the retina (retinal vein occlusion). OZURDEX, in some patients, can even reverse some of the vision loss caused by macular swelling. Call Southeastern Retina Specialists to learn more this intravitreal eye implant.
What to Expect
During this outpatient procedure, the patient is under local anesthesia. First, the retinal specialist will clean the surface of the eye in preparation, which will be followed with the doctor numbing the surface of the eye. OZURDEX is small and rod-shaped and comes in a special applicator that’s equivalent to the size of a pen. Holding the applicator, your doctor will inject the implant into the vitreous, the fluid-like gel between the lens and retina. You may experience pressure in the eye during the actual injection and may hear a “click” as the specialist presses the button that delivers the OZURDEX.
After Treatment
OZURDEX remains in the eye until all of the dexamethasone is released. As the corticosteroid level decreases, symptoms like inflammation may reappear. If your vision is affected once again, your doctor can recommend another OZURDEX treatment. Overall, most patients see improved vision over time and can restore some of the previous vision lost. With repeated treatments, the most common side effects are increased eye pressure and the development of cataracts. It’s important to contact your doctor right away if you experience these issues or any others.
