What is Kenalog®?
While Kenalog (Triamcinolone) is used for a wide variety of medical purposes, it’s commonly used to treat certain eye conditions in a safe and effective manner. This steroid, injected by our board-certified Jacksonville retina specialists, has shown to be helpful in patients suffering from diabetic macular edema, cystoid macular edema, some cases of wet macular degeneration, and more. Kenalog works to alleviate swelling and inflammation in the eye, especially the macula, which is part of the retina in the back of the eye. The inflammation caused by the various eye conditions can cause vision problems, such as blurry and distorted vision, up to vision loss. With continuous use, many patients can see effective results with the injections.
What to Expect
Kenalog is an outpatient treatment and is performed in an office setting. The retinal specialist will start off cleaning the eye in preparation of the injection. Numbing of the eye with a local anesthetic will follow. Kenalog will be injected into the vitreous cavity, which is the fluid in the middle of the eye that gives the eye its shape. Due to the numbing, the patient shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort. Subsequent injections will be determined by your doctor according to your condition and how effective Kenalog is for you.
After Treatment
After a Kenalog injection, most patients can expect the appearance of floaters in their line of vision. This typically lasts about 2 – 10 days and is due to the medication floating around in the eye. Floaters are harmless and can be reduced by adjusting your head position during sleep. Many patients achieve good results with this medication where blurry and distorted vision can be improved and worsening vision loss can be stopped.
