Meet Dr. Sullivan
Dr. John P. Sullivan is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases. He founded Southeastern Retina Specialists to provide the most compassionate and technologically advanced vitreoretinal care to patients in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Dr. Sullivan is the past President of the Duval County Society of Ophthalmology. He also served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Baptist Medical Center from 2004 to 2014. Today, his primary focus is building a strong practice, with the continued mission of making it one of the top vitreoretinal referral centers in the country.
Skills and Specialties
Dr. Sullivan is considered a leader in the field of retinal diseases and conditions. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles related to vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. He diagnoses and treats diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, as well as retinal detachments and tears, vascular diseases of the retina, and diabetic vitrectomy. He also performs surgery to correct macular hole and macular pucker disorders. His knowledge and expertise extends far beyond the diseases listed here as he is known to treat some of the most complex retina cases in the region.
Education and Training
Dr. Sullivan grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine where he graduated with honors. He was selected into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, which is only awarded to the top medical students in the country. Dr. Sullivan completed his ophthalmology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was appointed Chief Resident in his final year. Dr. Sullivan completed his vitreoretinal fellowship with Steve Charles, M.D. and Maurice Landers, M.D. at The Center for Retina Vitreous Surgery in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Sullivan has been practicing vitreoretinal surgery in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia since 1993. He founded Southeastern Retina Specialists to provide the most compassionate and technologically advanced vitreoretinal care.
