What is EYLEA®?
Eylea has been F.D.A.-approved to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which results in the breakdown of the retina’s membrane. This causes the body to react by forming new blood vessels that are abnormal and can lead to vision loss and scarring over the retina. To treat AMD, there’s Eylea, an anti-VEGF drug that’s formulated to prevent the growth of these new, abnormal blood vessels. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) inhibitors work to block the protein that results in the creation of these abnormal blood vessels.
Injected into the eye by one of our board-certified Jacksonville, FL ophthalmologists, Eylea treatments are superior over similar drugs since injections are less frequent and there are no monitoring requirements to adhere to.
What to Expect
An Eylea injection is an outpatient procedure that is short in duration. Prior to the injecting of the drug, the eye is properly numbed with a local anesthetic. A fine needle will be used to inject the medication into the eye and most patients have a pain-free experience. For the first 12 weeks, injections will be received every 4 weeks. After that, a patient will receive treatment about every 2 months.
After Treatment
Through clinical trials and doctor and patient reports, many patients have experienced a halt in the progression of vision loss. In fact, patients who were headed toward complete vision loss were able to keep their vision intact. For some patients, vision has been maintained for a number of years without worsening. Most patients tolerate the drug well, but should report any side effects immediately since Eylea can raise intraocular pressure significantly.
